TAIPEI, Taiwan — Large-sized tablet computers and hybrid laptop-tablet products will drive sales of the whole tablet market this year, according to a newly released report.
“Tablets of larger sizes will become the development focus of the sector among major brands,” the Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center (IEK) said in a prepared document.
More large-sized products will be launched as the market for 7-inch to 8-inch tablets has been eroded by smartphones of 5 inches or larger, it added.
In addition, hybrid products combine the advantages of both laptop and tablet computers, said the IEK under the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute.
Although 7-inch to 8-inch tablets will still dominate the global tablet market, those that are 9 inches or larger will soar from 118 million units in 2014 to 219 million units in 2018, the center predicted.
The market for large-sized tablet computers will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17 percent over the 2013-2018 period, outpacing the projected 15 percent growth for the whole tablet market, it said.
